All About Brake Rotors

What they are: the discs in your vehicle's brake system. They attach to its wheel hubs via ribs.
What they do: two things -- help create friction and scatter the heat of the braking process. They do the former by fastening to brake pads, which are mounted on top of brake calipers; the resistance is what helps slow and stop the vehicle.
How many and what types there are: blank & smooth (i.e., smooth), slotted, drilled (i.e., cross-drilled), and drilled & slotted -- a total of four.
Smooth brake rotors: many cars use these, as they're easy on brake pads, anti-corrosion, crack- resistant, and best of all, affordable.
Slotted brake rotors: many SUVs use these, as they offer better airflow, and thus, channel away dust and debris better.

When to replace them: every 112,000 km. Otherwise, when they begin to fail. They'll show certain symptoms when they do.
The signs they've gone bad: unusual noises during braking, wobbling when braking, and damaged rotor surfaces.
What to do when you see such symptoms: do a brake rotor inspection. Replace any problematic ones. Be sure to swap them out in pairs, too; it'll help keep your ride continue to brake properly.
