Brake Pads

All About Brake Pads

  • What they are: critical parts of your vehicle's disc brake system -- more specifically, the textured surfaces on top of its brake calipers.
  • What they do: create friction. It happens when the calipers and brake rotors rub together. This resistance helps slow and stop the vehicle's wheels and tires.
  • How many and what types there are: organic, metallic/semi-metallic, ceramic, and carbon fiber -- for a total of four.
  • Organic brake pads: the commonest -- dependable, easier on rotors, and best of all, inexpensive. They also don't produce much dust, either. This makes them ideal for everyday driving, and as a result, a lot of cars use them.
  • Ceramic brake pads: many sports cars use these, are they're more durable, reliable in various weather, and quieter. Plus, their dust isn't as sticky on wheels.
  • Metallic/semi-metallic brake pads: lots of trucks use these, as they work better at high heat, they feel firmer, and they stand up to brake fade.
  • Carbon fiber brake pads: many high-performance vehicles use these because they're the highest-strength and superior at very high temperatures, and as such, they provide ultimate stopping power.
  • When to change them: every 64,000 to 80,000 kilometers, usually. However, it depends on how and where you drive.
  • The signs they may be going bad: everything from dashboard warning lights, damaged pad surfaces, and whining brakes to taking longer to stop, vibrations, and grinding. The last two often indicate irregular pad wear, rotor warp, and real-time rotor damage.
