Spark Plugs

All About Spark Plugs

  • What they do: ignite the fuel-to-air ratio in your vehicle's engine.
  • Why they do it: the combustion is how the engine produces the power it runs on.
  • How they work: it's a process, one aptly called spark ignition.
  • How the process goes: it starts when your key turns in the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition switch triggers, and the car battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil begin generating electricity. The plugs' leads pick up that charge.
  • What happens then: said combustion occurs, and the engine's pistons, the crankshaft, the alternator, and more start running.
  • The symptoms of a bad one: there are several. Look for corroded and/or excessively wide leads, plug wear, breakage, worsening conductivity, hard starts, a reduction in fuel economy, engine misfires, rough idling, and trouble with acceleration.
  • When they should be changed: 1. if you see the signs mentioned above; 2. when you run an engine inspection and its results recommend it; and/or 3. before they exceed the mileage limits suggested in your owner's manual. Before ordering new ones, however, be sure you get genuine.
