Those that make up most factory engines: a block, a cylinder head, and several cylinders, with pistons for every cylinder, much of the time, plus valves and valve covers, a camshaft, a crankshaft, spark plugs, and an oil pan (or sump).

What each does: the valve covers and cylinder head seal the engine block, helping protect the valves and other parts, prevent gas from escaping, and keep oil from leaking. The intake and exhaust valves manage the engine's air and fuel ratio and adjust fume levels in the engine, respectively. The camshaft manages valve activity. Engine pistons compress the mixture of gas and oxygen, and spark plugs combust the mix initially. The crankshaft turns power into rotary motion, and the driveshaft and transmission use it to move wheels and tires. The oil sump or pan stores the motor oil, which is uses to lubricate parts as the engine runs.
